How to deal with problems after applying Windows 11 update

If there is a problem after installing Windows 11 regular update, the easy way is to uninstall the problematic update. You can also take care of it with System Restore if it is enabled. In addition, it may be effective to repair the system files with the command. This page introduces how to deal with problems caused by updating the update program.

Troubleshooting after applying updates

Resolved by deleting updates

If Windows 11 does not start , please refer to “Remove quality updates from situations where Windows 11 does not start” on the following page.

1. Open Uninstall Updates

Click the Start button to open Windows Update in Settings
, then click Settings in Start.
 Click Windows Update.
Click Update history in Windows Update.
Click Uninstall Updates at the bottom of the Update History.

2. Remove updates

When “Uninstall Update” is displayed, click “Uninstall” for the update to remove, and then click “Uninstall” again when the confirmation dialog is displayed.

If you don’t know which update caused the problem
, uninstall the update with the new date first. If it doesn’t work, remove the following updates.

When the uninstallation starts, the progress will be displayed in the progress bar, so wait as it is.
Once the update has finished removing, the box will say “Uninstalled…”.

Some programs say “restart required”. In this case, the removal of the update will be completed after the restart.

Measures after removing defective updates

Even if you uninstall the update program, if you do not take measures, the update program with the problem will be installed again. The countermeasure is to set “Pause updates” in “Windows Update” in the settings.
When Microsoft starts to provide a fix for the problematic update, click the “Resume Update” button to release the suspension.

Deal with system restore

If you have System Restore turned on, you can restore to before the update was installed by choosing a restore point before the update was installed. See below for detailed instructions on how to use System Restore.
Setting up and using Windows 11 System Restore
After restoring the system, perform the above-mentioned “Measures to be taken after deleting defective updates”.

Deal with system recovery with command

If system files are overwritten and erroneous or damaged due to the installation of update programs, the problem may be solved by repairing the command. Open Command Prompt or Terminal as administrator and run the following repair command:

  • sfc /scannow
  • Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
  • Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /Restorehealth
  • sfc /scannow
  • Dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup
