How to Add/Remove Windows 10 Start Menu Icons

Deletion of unnecessary app shortcut icons, such as the app icon not disappearing from the start menu even though the app has been deleted (uninstalled) in Windows 10. You can freely add or delete icons in the start menu, such as when you installed an app but there is no icon in the start menu . This page introduces how to remove and add icons in the start menu.

Remove Icon Directly From Start Menu

Right-click the desired icon and move the mouse pointer to “Others” in the menu to display a “submenu”. There are two types of work to remove icons that appear in this menu: ” Do not show in this list ” and ” Open file location “. If these two items are not in the menu, this operation will not remove the icon. 

Items That Operate Icons From The Start Menu

Click “Don’t show in this list” to remove the icon from the Start menu. 

■ Open file location

  • Click Open File Location.
  • Click to open the “Start Menu Folder” explained in the previous section.
  • If you open it in this way, you can open it even if it is a hidden folder.

Delete the icon to be deleted from the right-click menu
Right-click the desired icon and click “Delete” from the menu.

Now the icon disappears from the start menu.

Remove icon from start menu folder

If you delete the shortcut icon in the start menu folder, the icon can be removed from the desktop start menu. Conversely, if you add an icon to the “Program Folder” of the “Start Menu”, you can display the icon added to the Start Menu. *The icons displayed on the start menu are not all managed in the start menu folder. For more information, see ” Removing Icons from the Start Menu ” on this page. Start menu icons are managed in two places: user-wide and user-specific . First, let’s start with the common user location.

User common start menu location

The location of the start menu common to all users is managed by ProgramData “start menu”. An easy way to open it is to enter shell:common start menu in the address bar of explorer and click the ”  ” button to open the start menu folder for all users .

When expanding and opening a folder

When expanding and opening, the start menu folder is a hidden file by default, so set to display hidden files first. Show hidden files
Click “View” in Explorer to display the contents of the display, so click “Hidden files” to put a check mark.
*If you close Explorer and open it again, you will be able to see hidden files.

Expand and click “Programs” to open the place where the icons displayed to all users are managed. 

User common start menu folder

Delete the icon you want to remove from the start menu in the program folder of the start menu. This action will remove the deleted icon from the start menu for all users. 

User-specific start menu location

User-specific Start Menu locations are maintained in each Users Start Menu. You can open your user-specific Start Menu folder by typing shell:start menu in the Explorer address bar and clicking the → button .

If you expand and click “Programs”, the place where the icon displayed only for that user is managed opens. 

Start menu folders by user

Delete the icon you want to remove from the start menu in the program folder of the start menu. This action will remove the icon that was removed from the start menu using your username.

 

Add Icon To Start Menu

If you add shortcut icons such as apps and folders to the above “Programs”, the icons will be displayed in the “Start Menu”. *The display of icons on the start menu is managed by “User common” and “User specific”, so if you want to display it to other users, add the icon to “User common”.
