Remove the cables connected to the back of the computer and turn the computer around so that it faces toward you.

Remove the screws attached to the rightmost edge of your computer. Pull the right side cover and remove it completely.

Look for a cage holding a drive or multiple drives in front of your computer near the bottom. This cage holds your hard drive. If you are unsure about whether you are looking for the right cage or not, measure it. A hard cage measures about three and a half inches in width.

Remove the screws tapping your hard drive to the hard drive cage. Pull the unit out until it comes free of the cage and look under the unit. You are now looking at the printed circuit board in your unit. This has management input, output, buffer and cache tokens. An ATA drive’s circuit board typically has a large amount of printed wires leading to a flat-width connector on the back of the drive. SATA drives only have a few of these wires printed on them, leading to a very thin and small connector on the back. You can also count a SATA drive apart from others due to the lack of jumper pins on the back. ATA jumper pins come in a two-by-four grid.
