How to Snip and Capture Part of Windows 11 Screen – Screenshot Snipping Tool

Windows 11 comes standard with “Snipping Tool” as a screenshot application. Snipping Tool can be started with “Windows” + “Shift” + “S”, and you can cut and capture only the part of the screen selected by mouse operation. You can also sketch with the Snipping Tool. This page introduces how to capture a specified area with the screenshot app Snipping Tool and how to use sketch processing. The newly added recording feature in Snipping Tool allows you to snip a selection and record the screen. Please see the following page for detailed usage.

How to launch the Snipping Tool from the keyboard

It is convenient to start Snipping Tool and capture by keyboard operation. However, a separate operation is required to process sketches in image editing.

You can launch the Snipping Tool by pressing the “Windows” + “Shift” + “S” keys on your keyboard.

Another way to start the Snipping Tool with the keyboard is to set it to start with just the “Print Screen (PrtSc)” key. The page below shows how to turn off the function, but you can use it by turning it on.

1. As soon as the Snipping Tool is launched from the keyboard, the entire screen will be filtered and a “snipped” icon will appear at the top.
* To cancel the screenshot, press the “Esc” key.2. Click the cutout shape icon and decide the range to capture while left-clicking the cutout part with the mouse.

To process a screenshot image as a sketch

If you start Snipping Tool with the shortcut key and capture, the screen to edit the image will not be displayed automatically. You can open the sketch processing by the following three methods. 

  • When sketching a screen capture, while the dialog box is displayed, click “The screenshot has been saved by copying it to the clipboard. Please select here to markup and share the image . ” For example, you can display the editing screen for sketch processing of the Snipping Tool.
  • If the dialog box disappears , you can display the Snipping Tool’s sketch editing screen by clicking the screenshot image from the ” Action Center (notification)” displayed on the right side of the screen .
  • In addition, you can also start the Snipping Tool from the icon and open the sketch processing of the screenshot image with “Open File” in the menu.

If you start Snipping Tool from the shortcut icon, you can specify the delay time and execute the capture. In addition, the captured image and the editing screen are automatically displayed, and you can continue sketching.

1. Click the Start button and click Settings in the Start menu.
 2. Click “All apps” in the Start menu.
 3. Scroll the screen and click the “Snipping Tool” icon to launch it.

It’s a pain to launch from “All apps” every time, so it’s convenient to pin the icon to the start menu.

■ Create on Desktop

If you want to create an icon directly on the desktop (home), click and hold the “Snipping Tool” icon and move to the home screen until “Link” is displayed.

Setting the delay capture time

The screenshot will be executed immediately after selecting the range to be cut, but you can delay execution by clicking the “Clock” icon and selecting between “1 to 10 seconds”.
1. When the Snipping Tool is launched, click + New .

Where screenshot images are saved
The location where screenshot images are saved is introduced in the Save location of captured images section of this page.

To sketch the captured image

If you execute the screenshot, the sketch processing application will be displayed automatically, so you can edit the image as it is.
If you don’t see the Sketching App, click the Snipping Tool icon on your taskbar.
Later, you can start the Snipping Tool from the icon and open the sketch processing of the screenshot image with “Open File” in the menu.

Folder location where screenshot images are stored
Screenshot images are automatically saved in the “Screenshots” folder inside the “Pictures” folder.

You can view the clipboard location of the screenshot image by pressing Windows + V. You can copy and paste from the clipboard. However, it cannot be used unless clipboard copy is enabled. To activate, press “Windows” + “V” to open the clipboard and click “On”.
The clipboard is
a function that temporarily caches (saves) images captured by screenshots and copied text. Also, the clipboard cache is deleted when the computer is restarted.

Snipping Tool How to sketch a screen capture image

A vulnerability was reported on 2022/03/21 that can be restored before processing by overwriting and saving an image that has been sketched with the Snipping Tool of Windows 11, but Microsoft has announced that it can be fixed by updating. If you don’t have automatic app updates, or if you’re in a hurry, you can update manually.

Basic operation of the sketch processing application

Open an image and sketch

Screenshot images can also be sketched by opening images such as photos.  Undo/Redo
Click the turn icon to undo/redo. The keyboard shortcut “Ctrl” + “(Z Undo) (Y Redo)” can also be used.

 Delete drawing
“Eraser” deletes everything you draw . Right-click the Eraser icon and click Erase All Ink.
* If partial deletion is required, use “Undo/Redo”.

Click the “Disk” icon to open the save screen.

The image at the time of the capture is copied to the clipboard, but what you draw is not. Click the “Copy” icon to copy to the clipboard, including the sketch you have drawn.

Sketch with pen tool

“Ballpoint pen” and “Highlighter pen” can be used as the pen tool. Click the pen icon to make it ready for use.  Click the selected pen icon again to open a screen where you can set the color and thickness. You can also view the settings by right-clicking.
 To use the pen, select the pen icon, left-click on the image and move to draw a line.

If you right-click the “ruler” icon, you can select “ruler” or “protractor” from the menu.
Hiding definitions and protractors
Definitions do not disappear automatically. Click the “Ruler/Protractor” icon again and click the displayed type to remove it.

Move the ruler to where you want to draw the line.
Place the mouse pointer above or below the ruler and move it while left-clicking to draw a straight line.

a ruler Move the mouse cursor to the angle display on the ruler and rotate the scroll button to change the angle of the ruler.
If you don’t see the angle display, move horizontally to the left while facing the ruler and it will appear. To draw a diagonal line, place the mouse pointer above or below the ruler and move it while left-clicking to draw a diagonal line.

Move the mouse pointer over the protractor and rotate the scroll button to change the size.
 Move the mouse pointer to the edge of the protractor and move it while left-clicking to draw a circle.
