How to transfer large amounts of data

Data transfer is very common and essential in our daily life and work. The amounts of data to be transferred can be large. The usual methods of transferring data include sharing and copying files over a local area network, or setting up an FTP server for a Wide Area Network, but these methods are only feasible within the Megabyte range. When you need to transfer large amounts of data, there are more suitable methods. Instructions
Using External Hard Drives
Plug the external hard drive cable into your computer’s USB port and plug in the power cable. The external drive will be installed and connected automatically. Go to “My Computer” and see the external hard drive. It will be shown as a removable drive. The external hard drive can contain a large volume of data to 1 TB (terabyte), although 2TB external hard drives are becoming increasingly common

Download and install 7-Zip from the 7.-Zip organization site (see Resources). It is open source software. Arrange the files to be transferred into a folder, right click on the folder, select “Add to yourfoldername.7z” from the drop-down menu, and the closing process will begin. The time needed to close the folder depends on the data volume. The compression rate also depends on your folder data formats. The compression rate of 7-Zip format is 30% to 70% better than regular zip format. .

Right-click on the 7-Zip file and select “Properties” in the properties window, and see the “Size” in the “General” tab. Copy and paste the 7-Zip file to the external hard drive as long as the file size is smaller than the external hard drive space. The transfer speed will be faster if the external 3.0 hard drive uses USB technology as opposed to the older USB 2.0.

Right-click on the external drive icon on the right side of the taskbar when the transfer is done, then click “Eject USB Hard Drive.” The message “It is safe to remove hardware” will appear. Finally, disconnect the external drive.
