Settings to customize the Windows 11 Start menu

Starting with Windows 11 version 22H2, Start settings have been added, allowing you to customize things such as displaying more icons in the Start menu and adjusting the recommended amount. Also added the ability to display an icon next to the power button in Start. This page introduces how to set the layout of the Start menu.

How to open Start Settings

 Open Start Settings from Start Menu
1. If you right-click on an empty place such as an icon in the start menu, “Start Settings” will be displayed.
 2. Click “Start Settings” to display the start settings. 

Open Start Settings from Personalization

1. On the desktop (home) screen where there is nothing such as an icon, right-click and click “Personalize” in the menu.
 2. When Personalization appears, click Start to open Start Settings.

Basic Start Menu Customization

Customize the Start menu by selecting from three different display formats in the layout .
 

  • Show more icons in the start menu
  • Default start menu layout
  • Show more recommendations in the Start menu

Show more icons in the start menu

Show more pins Increase the icon display area in the Start menu to display more pinned icons. However, the display of “recommended” will be less.
The “more pinning” display area has one row of icons displayed and one row less recommendations.

Default start menu layout

default value The size of the display area for “icons” and “recommended” in the start menu becomes the default value.
Show more recommendations in the Start menu

Show more recommendations Increase the display area for recommendations in the Start menu to increase the number of displays. However, the display of “icons” is reduced.

In the “Show more recommendations” display area, one row of recommendations is displayed and one row of icons is reduced.

Setting and changing the “Recommended” display in the Start menu

You can change the setting of the three types of display contents displayed in the recommendation of the start menu by “on display” and “off hide” of the switch button.

Display settings for apps added to Start menu recommendations

View recently added apps Set whether or not to display icons of recently installed application software as recommendations. It will not be deleted even if it is hidden (turned off), and will be displayed if it is returned to display.
Display settings for frequently used apps in Start menu recommendations

Show frequently used apps Set whether or not to display software icons that are frequently used by apps. The initial value is “off hidden”.
Display settings such as recently used files in Start menu recommendations
Show recently opened items in Start, Jump Lists and File Explorer Set whether or not to display recently opened files as recommendations. If you turn off the display, the history will be deleted, and will not be displayed even if you return to the display.

This setting display is linked with the “Recently used items (files)” of Explorer and the display of the task bar “Jump list”.
A jump list is a history or pin that appears when you right-click an app button on the taskbar.

Hide Start Menu Recommendations

Set the icon to be displayed next to the power button in the start menu

Customize the icon to appear next to the power button in Start for quick access. The icon display method is operated by the switch button of the box such as “Setting” or “Document” which can be selected by default. 1. Click on “Folder Box” and you’ll see what the icon can look like next to the power button.
 2. Turn on the switch button for the icon you want to display next to the power button.
 3. When you open Start, you can see that the icon you turned on appears next to the power button.
