What hard drives are compatible with a Compaq Presario 1700 Notebook

Compaq Presario 1700 series notebooks ship with a 20 GB Ultra DMA hard drive. This unit can be replaced with a number of units produced by Compaq and several units produced by other brands. Compaq Presario 1700 notebooks require a hard drive with a height of no more than 9.5 mm. If the caddy (or hard drive case) from the original drive cannot be used, a new caddy must be purchased along with the new hard drive. Compaq Hard Drives
Compaq hard drives that are available for the Presario 1700 series range in size from 10GB to 160GB. The car speed will be 5600 or 4200 RPM. Faster drives will ensure faster access to data on the drive. Larger drives require faster drive speed in order to access all data on the drive quickly.
Hard Drives by Other Companies
Any Ultra DMA notebook hard drive can potentially be used in a Compaq Presario 1700 series notebook. To ensure it will fit in the laptop case, make sure the unit is more than 9.5 mm high. It is recommended that hard drives larger than 30GB of disk space have speeds above 5600 RPM.
external hard drives
Compaq Presario 1700 notebooks are equipped with USB ports. Therefore, if the hard drive is not damaged, additional storage can be provided by an external hard drive. External hard drives plug directly into the USB port and are compatible with all computers that support USB connections.
