Windows 11 Folder Options Freeze Solution

When Windows 11 folder option freezes, restart Explorer to deal with it. If Folder Options freezes frequently, clean up temporary files and check your system. This page introduces what to do when Windows 11 folder options freeze. What to do when Folder Options suddenly freezes

If Windows 11 folder options are frozen and cannot be set or closed, folder options are linked as explorer setting tools, so restart explorer to deal with it. 1. Start Task Manager
Right-click the Start button and click “Task Manager” in the menu.
With Ver.22H2, you can start the task manager by right-clicking on the taskbar. If the task manager is “simple display” as shown below, click “Details (D)” at the bottom left to switch to the detailed screen.
 2. Restart Explorer to deal with folder option freezes
Since the screens are different between versions 21H2 and 22H2, they are explained separately. ■ Restart Explorer with Ver.22H2

  • On the “Processes” screen, click “Explorer” to select it.
  • Click “Restart Task” at the top of the screen to restart Explorer.

 ■ Restart Explorer with Ver.22H1

  • On the “Processes” screen, click “Explorer” to select it.
  • Click “Restart” at the bottom right of the screen to restart Explorer.

After Explorer is restarted
Folder Options closes when Explorer is restarted. It also closes all open Explorer windows. In order to refresh the PC, it is recommended to restart the PC at this stage.

What to do if Folder Options freezes frequently

Solution 1. Clean File Explorer History

It cleans up explorer’s recent history, etc. to make explorer lighter and folder options less stressful. Open Folder Options and click Clear File Explorer History under General.

Solution 2. Clean up unnecessary files

Clean up unnecessary temporary files to keep Explorer light and Folder Options uncluttered. 1. Click the Start button and click Settings in Start.
 2. Click Storage under the System item.
 3. When Storage appears, click Temporary Files.
 4. Review the contents and deselect any that you do not want to delete, then click Delete Files.
Solution 3. Check System Files

There may be system issues that cause Folder Options to freeze frequently. Open a command prompt or terminal as administrator and run the ‘sfc’ system file checker. 1. Launch Command Prompt

  • After pressing the “Windows” key on your keyboard, press ” cmd “.
  • When the search screen appears, click “Run as administrator” in Command Prompt.

*This operation is the same as entering “cmd” in the search.
 

From the Start menu
To start from the Start menu, click “All apps” and click “Windows Tools” in the list to open Explorer, right-click “Command Prompt” and select “Run as administrator” “Click.
 

2. Type sfc /scan now and press Enter on your keyboard.
It will start checking and repairing system files. It may take some time, but wait until it finishes.3. If you see “…no integrity violations found.” or “…repaired successfully.”, the system check is complete.
 After the system check has completed successfully, restart your PC and check if File Explorer works. If the screen says “… was not repaired” or “… operation could not be performed”, you will need to perform a further repair operation with the Dism command Since the explanation is long, please refer to the following page for how to restore system files with commands.
Solution 4. Launch Folder Options in Control Panel

If Folder Options freezes and you are unable to make settings, you may be able to make settings by opening Folder Options from the Control Panel. 1. If Explorer is open, close all Explorer windows first. 2. Open Control Panel
from the start menu To start from the Start menu, click “All apps”, click “Windows Tools” in the list to open Explorer, and click “Control Panel”.

  • Press the Windows key on your keyboard, then press control .
  • When the search screen appears, click “Control Panel”.

*This operation is the same as entering “control” in the search.
 3. When Control Panel opens, click “Category” and select “Large or small icons”.
4. Once the view has been changed, click “Explorer Options” on the screen to open Folder Options.
Point:
If you open the Folder Options from the Control Panel, you can open only the Folder Options without opening the Explorer, so the load on the Explorer will not be applied, the Folder Options will not freeze, and you will be able to make settings.
